SE-only need apply
Unless your Xterra is an SE as opposed to an XE model - this mod won't help you. But for
those of us with an SE wishing to actually be able to see out of our sunroof - this is
the ticket. I've never used the gear basket and actually removed it before driving off
the dealer lot. I got a truck with a sunroof, and I want to use it!
This particular mod is made out of Tuffak and not PlexiGlas - which is much tougher, and
is a slightly bronze tinted color. The screws and related hardware are all made of stainless
steel so as not to rust.
In actual use, it's fantastic - to have a completely unobstructed view of the sky! Note that
the cabin will be much brighter because of this, but you can easily block out that light with
the factory sunroof cover. I usually only use the cover in the winter to provide a little
extra insulation from the cold and block out the bleak and blah winter sky, or when I intend
on using the KC Daylighters mounted on the roof, which tend to light up everything,
including the cabin.
sunroof maintenance
A sunroof can be a LOT of trouble when it gets old... A little maintenance
along the way helps a lot and keeps things working smoothly as well as eliminates
most sunroof noises. Not to mention, looking through a sparkling sunroof
at the skies above is kinda neat. The following procedure is good to follow
every six months to a year or so - as long as you do it regularly and look for
any problems.
- Take off the deflector assy. by removing four Torx screws
- Wash deflector and wax both sides of clear Tuffak/PlexiGlas
- Carefully take out and wash the sunroof assy. (yes, it comes out!)
- Use some Rain-X "Glass Polish" on the sunroof glass if you have water spots
- Wax the exterior side of the sunroof glass
- Clean all rubber seals and apply silicone spray (save for the one ON the X)
- Apply talcum/baby powder to the seal on the body of the X
- Clean out the channel around said gasket and flush out drain holes
- Also clean off any dirt buildup on top of the X around the channel
- Lightly oil the four hinge pins
- Drop everything back in place
