When i'm driving or Parked and run the engine up to 2K RPM plus then immediatley back off the gas, the engine slams, almost stalls. It is particularly present at 35-50 mph causing the "slamming" effect when going from acceleration to coast and it slams against the tranny. Any Ideas?

Why he posted a new thread to reply is a mystery, but he said:
"I have a 2001 XTerra, 4wd auto trans. 80K miles, well maintained."

Sounds like the driver's side motor mount. Fine under torque, but slams when you back off. The hesitation is probably the infamous torn intake duct.

Buy a sub compact. lol.
I believe this subject has been tackled numerous times. You could probably do a search for gas mileage and find plenty of information.
The best thing you can do is just accept the fact that you bought an SUV and it wasn't made for getting great gas mileage.
I removed the intake resonators and run anywhere from 17-20 mpg, depending on how fast I drive and how long the hills are that I have to climb.

Open air intake and a free, less restrictive exhaust sytems is what I did. Also going to all synthetic fluids will help.
