Yes, it's bolted down to prevent the average knucklehead (or Jiffy-Lube guy) from not thinking before putting fluid in. It requires a special fluid (Nissan Matic-J or equivalent) and not your off-the-shelf Dexron-III/Mercon or Mercon V stuff.

unscrew a bolt to take a dipstick out...interesting, i would love to put my eyes on exactly what your looking at. i would venture to say no though, tendency is to at least make it as easy as possible to "check" fluids. it would be a poor design if tools were required "at all" just to check a fluid. havent seen a 2nd gennie in a while so i wish i could answer though.

I explained it already
As for checking transmission fluid, it's something that really needs to be done, what, maybe 3 or 4 times in the life of the vehicle anyway.

I have come across several (Chevy) cars that have no trans dipstick at all, as they have it set up as a sealed unit. I'm not sure I like it, but if the trans remains problem free, that's cool. I'll hhave to check my wife's "Jeep" Compass with the CVT to see if I can even check the fluid there.
I do check my trans fluid, and break fliud, before and after towing.
