Nissan to cut 20,000 Jobs

Posted on Feb 09, 2009 - 07:09 AM
Topic: Nissan
Nissan, Japan's third-largest automaker, announced a series of steps Monday to deal with the eco nomic downturn, including slashing its workforce by 20,000. The cost-cutting measures makes Nissan the latest among the country's carmakers to take drastic action in the face of a worsening financial outlook. The job reductions will bring down Nissan's head count from 235,000 to 215,000.

The company also said it is eliminating bonuses for its board of directors. And until its financial situation improves, it is reducing board members' salaries by 10%.

The company took the steps after reporting a $860 million third-quarter consolidated net loss after tax. For the same period a year ago, it had a net income of $1.5 billion. Nissan's net revenue is down 34.4%. It has revised its forecast for the fiscal year ending in March, saying it will post a net loss of $2.9 billion.

2009 Nissan Frontier, Xterra Test Drive: New Trucks Get Smart

Posted on Sep 08, 2008 - 09:28 AM
Topic: Nissan
Like every other truck manufacturer, Nissan isn't pleased with the cards it's been dealt by $4-per-gallon gas prices. The small SUV segment alone is down by 30 percent compared with this time last year, and that speaks volumes about the impact of fuel costs. But Nissan intends to stay the course, insisting that the truck market is viable and likely to rebound, so the company aims to gobble up its share by trimming and tailoring its offerings.

Above all, Nissan plans to add value to each of the truck models by including equipment that was formerly only available on higher-grade models, and by introducing additional features. There are still truck buyers out there, and Nissan wants to attract as many of them as it can.

2008 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year: The Contenders

Posted on Oct 25, 2007 - 10:13 PM
Topic: News
"This year, the crossover takes a stand"
By Editors of Motor Trend

A truck in a tux? Not any more. The sport/utility vehicle cuts a broad swathe through the 21st-century automotive landscape. Think of a car genre-sporty, family, budget, luxury, utilitarian, gas-miser -- and you'll find its equivalent in today's sport/utility segment. What once was the territory of a handful of off-road specialists is now a lucrative business for everyone from Jeep to Porsche, Kia to Cadillac, offering everything from gutsy rock-crawlers to fuel-sipping hybrids.

For the majority of consumers, the ability of a sport/utility vehicle to keep going when the road runs out is no longer its raison d'etre. Instead, today's sport/utility vehicles tend to be defined by three key characteristics: (1) High ride height and high seating position relative to conventional automobiles; (2) a two-box body and multifunction interior that allows a combination of seating and load-carrying configurations; (3) all-wheel drive, either standard or optional across the range.
